Encinitas Chiropractor for Kids - Pediatric Chiropractic

Children deserve their best chance to express optimum health and their peak potential.  It's a child's nervous system that controls their amazing development.  While all doctors of chiropractic are able to take care of kids, The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) recognizes pediatrics as a subspecialty of general chiropractic.  According to the ACA, "The Pediatric Chiropractor is a chiropractor with specialized, advanced training and certification in the evaluation, care and management of health and wellness conditions of infancy, childhood, and adolescence.  This specialist provides primary, comprehensive, therapeutic and preventative chiropractic health care for newborns through adolescents."

The doctors at Chiropractic Health & Happiness have received extensive training and certification in prenatal and pediatric chiropractic techniques by the International Chiropractic Pediatrics Association (ICPA).  Chiropractic care for pregnant women and children is different than it is for adults, and the adjustments are very gentle.

More Parents are Taking Their Newborns, Kids, and Teens to the Chiropractor

A recent article in Reuters Health news suggested that more parents are taking their children to the chiropractor, and are very happy they have done so.  A study published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicated that nearly 3 percent of children in the United States received osteopathic spinal manipulation or chiropractic adjustments in 2007 making it the most common form of doctor directed complementary or alternative medicine used by children.

A trend toward greater use of chiropractic by children has not gone unnoticed by the medical profession.  In December 2008, the journal Pediatrics (the official journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics) confirmed that chiropractic is the most common complementary and alternative primary healthcare practice used by children and adolescents in the U.S.

The vast majority of parents report that their children enjoy their chiropractic adjustments and look forward to future visits.  They also report that their children experience a greater level of health and wellness while under chiropractic care.

Chiropractic Care for Kids is Safe, Gentle, and Effective

Chiropractors have been providing safe, gentle, and effective care for children for more than 110 years. According to the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), “chiropractic is one of the safest forms of children’s health care. A chiropractor does not adjust a baby or a child the same way as he or she adjusts an adult. A baby’s spine is very supple during the first few months of life, so the doctor of chiropractic applies only a slight pressure [approximately the amount necessary to check a ripe tomato] to make an adjustment.”

Studies are beginning to show that chiropractic can help children not only with back pain, neck pain, headaches, and other musculoskeletal complaints, but with health issues as varied as asthma, allergies, behavioral issues, ear infections, scoliosis, digestive issues, and colic.

Research Shows Several Profound and Unexpected Health Benefits of Chiropractic Care for Kids

The International Chiropractic Pediatrics Association (ICPA) has initiated a ground breaking study on the safety and effectiveness of chiropractic care for children.  Preliminary results are outstanding and show that chiropractic care for children is both safe and effective.  Even more significant is that parents reported three unexpected improvements, or side benefits associated with their child's chiropractic care:

  • Better Sleep
  • Better Behavior
  • Stronger Immune System

These benefits mean that chiropractic care can contribute to the health and happiness of the entire family!  Beyond relief from a specific symptom or health issue, A 2009 survey of chiropractors and parents of chiropractic pediatric patients, conducted by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association revealed that “the indicated primary reason for chiropractic care of children was ‘wellness care’ (Alcantara 2009).”

A Mom's Perspective on the Benefits of Chiropractic Care for Her Daughter

(Actual patient at Chiropractic Health & Happiness)

"My daughter (9 years old) had been suffering from emotional outbursts. This had been an issue since birth, but had always been manageable...kind of like a thunderstorm that we would get through until the next time...etc... As she got older, the outbursts became more like incidents of rage (over trivial things) and often became physical, where those around her were at risk.  She cried every day...not kidding.  Everybody told me that she's "just the middle child" looking for attention (including my husband).

As her mom, I just knew it was more and had to do something about it.  I felt like I was walking on eggshells every day!  I never knew what to expect and when the next incident of rage was coming. It was scary and really disruptive to our whole family.  The final straw was when she dug a hole in her head with her fingernail after being sent to her room for fighting with her brother.  She was just a bundle of nerves ready to explode at any time.

Well...needless to say, we found Dr. Lindsay and Dr. Ian.  The chiropractic care received has changed our lives.  My daughter does not cry anymore.  She has not had an incident of rage or self injury since we started care.  She is able to recognize when she is feeling overwhelmed, walk away and give herself a time out, and come back and communicate with words.  The difference is demonstrable!

I feel much more emotionally connected with my daughter since her care began.  The decision to seek chiropractic care with this office has been priceless.  I highly recommend this office to parents who have children suffering from emotional distress of any kind. Pain is not always physical

The Drug Free Benefits of Chiropractic Care for Kids are in Sharp Contrast with our Nation's Health Trends

1-in-4 children in the U.S. took drugs for chronic conditions in 2009 making children the leading growth demographic for the pharmaceutical industry with the increase of prescription drug use among youngsters nearly four times higher than in the overall population, according to a report by Medco Health Solutions Inc

According to a USA Today article, drug use for psychiatric and behavioral disorders among younger adults has climbed sharply. In adults 20 to 44, use of antipsychotic and behavior modification drugs including treatments for ADHD more than tripled.

It is clear that our current system of healthcare is not working for our children. Incidence of allergies, autism, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorders, anxiety, depression, diabetes, ear infections, obesity, and many other childhood diseases and disorders are more common than ever before and so are the drugs that treat them.

That is why more and more informed parents are looking for proactive options outside of drugs and mainstream medicine to make sure that their kids grow up as healthy and happy as possible. Chiropractic offers parents a natural, drug free approach to their children’s healthcare.

When Should I Take my Child to the Chiropractor?

The International Chiropractic Pediatrics Association (ICPA) recommends that children should have their spine and nervous system checked by a chiropractor as soon as possible after birth and with each major milestone. Dr. Arpad DeNagy, MD a former neurologist from the Rockefeller Institute recommends, "chiropractic care should begin at birth on a preventative basis" and we agree!

In a supporting study, a group of M.D.'s found that 80% of children's nerve systems are not in balance and concluded that, "all newborns should have their spines checked by chiropractors."

Even the most natural births are somewhat traumatic to the infant and may have caused nerve system interference, which if left uncorrected can have serious effects later in life. Stress and strain can also be placed on their developing spine and delicate nerve system as a child learns to lift their head, crawl, walk, ride a bike, play sports, and carry a heavy backpack.  It is never too early or too late to have your child’s spine and nervous system checked by a doctor of chiropractic.

Chiropractor Approved Backpack Tips

Backpack weight is becoming an increasing problem, and studies show that heavy backpacks can lead to both back pain and poor posture. In fact, backpacks were the cause of 7,000 emergency room visits in 2001 and countless complaints of muscle spasms, neck and shoulder pain.  Thankfully, many backpacks are designed to be ergonomic while remaining fashionable. The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) offers tips to help prevent the pain and potential health issues caused by backpack misuse.

Two Doctors: Healthcare and Sick Care

Many of the parents who take their kids to the chiropractor do so because they believe in the power of prevention and wellness.  Many parents are now choosing to have two different doctors for their kids:

  • A pediatrician that can provide medications when necessary and deliver reactive care in times of serious illness and injury.
  • A chiropractor that can provide preventative wellness care and maintenance of the child’s structure, immune system, and overall health.

It takes far less time, money, and effort to be proactive and raise kids with a healthy lifestyle than to wait until unhealthy habits have resulted in symptoms or disease.  Proactive parents around the country are turning to chiropractic care as a proactive and drug free approach to their children's health and wellness.

Chiropractors do not treat disease, they help to correct areas of imbalance in the spine and nervous system that interfere with the body's natural ability to heal itself.  Through gentle chiropractic adjustments, counseling on proper nutrition, exercise, and good posture, a chiropractor can help parents make sure their children grow up healthy and happy, expressing their full potential.
